Tips When Picking Up Your Rental Car

When starting your vacation in a new country, you are probably eager to grab your rental car and hit the road. It’s worth spending a little extra time while picking up your car, however, in order to maximize your savings and minimize potential safety hazards associated with renting a vehicle. Here are a few things to keep in mind when picking up your rental car:

Familiarize Yourself with the Vehicle

Before taking off in your new rental car, familiarize yourself with its various features, especially if they’re different from what you’re used to.  Make sure you know which side of the car the gas is filled on, how to turn on the various lights, and where the button for the windshield wipers is. Taking a few minutes to get familiar with your rental car can make you more comfortable and make your driving experience safer.

Inspect the Car for Damage

Before you go, make sure to walk around the car and inspect for damage. If possible, do so with a car rental company representative, and have them write down any damage that you notice. To be extra careful, take a quick cell phone video of any damage you see. Make sure that any damage has been documented and signed off on before leaving.

Read the Paperwork

Many of us make a habit of signing off on paperwork without really reading it, but in the case of rental cars it’s important to pay attention to the fine print. In particular, you will want to read the condition report to make sure it’s accurate and matches your own observations about the vehicle. You will also want to read the terms and conditions, since these can vary a lot and have an impact on your bill when you return the car later.

Consider a Compact Car

If the car rental agency happens to have a compact car available, you should consider renting it instead of a larger car. Compact cars often rent at a lower rate than larger models, and will also save you on gas prices. If driving in a crowded urban area, a compact car can also make navigating through traffic and finding parking much easier.

Check for Hidden Fees

Don’t sign any paperwork until you’ve checked for hidden fees that can seriously impact the cost of your car rental. Common fees and charges include extra daily charges for things like GPS and child car seats, charges for younger drivers, charges for allowing a second person to drive, and early or late return penalties.
