Introduction
When you’re looking for beautiful surroundings, diverse cultures and relaxed lifestyle, Australia is the place to go! Dating back approximately 60,000 years, inhabitants have long called the country home – and though it was primarily established as a penal colony, Australia has since grown into a culturally rich destination for travelers around the world.

Location
Australia is located in the southern hemisphere, and is the sixth largest country in the world based on total area – but is still the smallest continent. The country is made up of the mainland and many islands ranging in size – most notable being Tasmania and Melville Island. Australia is surrounded by the beautiful Pacific and Indian Oceans, essentially making it an island itself!

One of the most notable natural landmarks in the world, the Great Barrier Reef, is located off the coast of Australia and ranges over one thousand miles in size – making it the world’s largest coral reef. Many landscapes are found in the country, including deserts, mountainous regions and rainforests.

Population and Language
While there is no official language, Australian English is used by a majority of the population. Other ethnic groups throughout Australia speak Chinese, Italian, Greek, and Vietnamese. The country itself is well populated, with an overall population of 22 million inhabitants. Australia’s major cities include Sydney, followed by Melbourne, Brisbane and Perth, respectively.

Religion
The major religion practiced in Australia is Christian, predominantly Protestant, Catholic and other denominations. Various ethnic groups in Australia also practice the Buddhist or Muslim faith.

Major Cities and Tourist Destinations
Australia is home to many major cities and tourist destinations. Canberra, the national capital, is located just south of Sydney, with a population of approximately four million, in the Australian Capital Territory. The state of New South Wales features the vibrant and populated city of Sydney, where the famed Opera House sits on the waterfront. Melbourne, located in the state of Victoria, features a plethora of cultural attractions, beaches, shopping and dining. Other well-known cities in Australia include Brisbane in Queensland, where the Great Barrier Reef is located, and Adelaide in South Australia also home to 500 annual festivals, and Perth in Western Australia. The Northern Territory features Ayers Rock, the Kakadu National Park and Kata Tjuta!

Climate
The climate in the Land Down Under is one of the factors that keep visitors returning year after year. Australia is an ideal location for those looking to escape the frigid temperatures of the northern hemisphere during the winter months, as its location in the southern hemisphere means its seasons are opposite that of the northern half of the world. Seasons include:

  • Fall – March to May
  • Winter – June to August
  • Spring – September to November
  • Summer – December to February

The temperature and weather varies throughout the continent, though most of the country experiences mild temperatures and weather patterns. The northern portion of Australia experiences warmer temperatures, while the southern portion has cooler winters and occasional dropping temperatures. The variety of climates provides plenty of recreational activities for those visiting Australia throughout the year! Sunbathing in the warm sun during summer or skiing in the country’s high mountains and ski resorts in winter provides a diverse range of outdoor options.

Economy
The national currency in Australia is known as the Australian dollar and comes in a range of denominations featuring well-known Australians. Austalia’s GDP is approximately U.S. $915 billion. Australia relies on her service industries, then industry sectors for stability. Her agricultural products range from wheat crops to livestock, including sheep and cattle.
Australia exports roughly U.S. $271 billion in ores, wool, meats and transport equipment annually, and imports approximately U.S. $242 billion in computers and office equipment, telecommunications and crude oil.

Transportation
Plenty of modes of transportation are available in Australia to make sure you go everywhere on your itinerary. Car hires, located in many airports and cities, provides visitors with a variety of vehicle options for any of your needs. Those who plan to stay in a single location might appreciate the bus networks and rail systems found throughout the major cities. There are many beautiful roadways and scenic drives throughout the country – find a car hire that offers the use of caravans, four-wheel drive, cars and motorbikes for any excursion. Major airports that serve Australia include the Sydney Airport (Kingsford Smith Airport) in Sydney, the Ayers Rock Airport (Connellan Airport) in Uluru, Perth Airport in Perth, and the Darwin International Airport in Darwin.
