Introduction
Singapore was established a British trading colony in the early 19th century and became an independent country in 1965.

Approximately the size of El Paso Texas, the Republic of Singapore is located slightly north of the equator at the tip of the Malay Peninsula. The country is comprised of Singapore Island and 58 smaller islands. Singapore Island is small enough so that you can reach any point within a couple hours car trip.

Population and language
The population of Singapore is three million, the majority of them ethnic Chinese, followed by Malay and Indian ethnic groups.  There are three official languages: Mandarin, English, and Malay. Yjere are many foreign national who also call Singapore home. There are many other languages spoken by the diverse populace along with various Chinese dialects.

Buddhism is the most common religion, followed by Islam, Taoism, Hinduism, Catholicism, and other Christian denominations.

Major cities and tourist destinations
Singapore is both a city and a country, similar to the ancient Green city-states like Athens. There are many popular destinations in the city, including the zoo, the botanical gardens, the world’s largest Ferris Wheel called the Singapore Flyer, the science center featuring 850 interactive rides, the Little India and Chinatown neighborhoods, the Arab Quarter’s cloths and silk stores, and numerous nightclubs and entertainment venues. Traditional festivals and holidays are celebrated throughout the year and visitors can expect luxury hotels, world class restaurants, and great shopping. To the north of the city are the Bukit Timah and Central Catchment Area nature preserves. A popular day trip is going to Sentosa, the island amusement arcade.

Climate
The climate in Singapore is generally hot and humid year round. There are two monsoon seasons a year: the Northeastern monsoon from December to March and the Southwestern monsoon that lasts from June to September.

Economy
After gaining its independence, Singapore became one of the world’s most prosperous countries with strong international trading partners. Singapore has few natural resources so its economy was based on a robust free trade policy from the time of its founding. It is currently the world’s second busiest port, behind only Rotterdam, and has a gross domestic product of $255.7 billion.

Prosperity is widespread with low unemployment and well maintained infrastructure. Most residents live in comfortable, modern housing, crime is low, and the city is clean and modern.

Exports include electronics and telecommunications equipment, pharmaceuticals, and refined petroleum products. Major imports include machinery, mineral fuels, chemicals, food products, and consumer goods.

Transportation
Singapore Changi Airport is the main airport of Singapore. Once in the city, the train and subway systems are fast and affordable. Walking is also a popular means for getting around. All major attractions are easily accessible by tour bus.
