Car hire Turkey

Turkey straddles both the European and Asian continents. Most of the country is located in Asia, and is separated from European Turkey by the Dardanelles, the Sea of Marmara, and the Bosphorus. The country's total area is 302,535 square miles (sq km). It is surrounded by seas on three sites: the Mediterranean to the south, the Aegean Sea to the west, and the Black sea to the North. Its land boundaries are shared with Greece, Bulgaria, Armenia, Azerbaijan, Georgia, Iran, Iraq, and Syria. Once the center of the Ottomon Empire, modern Turkey was established in the 1920s by nationalist leader Kemal Ataturk.

Population and language
An estimated 74.7 million people live in Turkey. The official language, Turkish, is the native language of approximately 85% of the population. Kurdish is also spoken here. Ethnic Turks comprise 70-75% of the population, while Kurds comprise around 18% of the population. Turkey is home to significant minorities of Greeks, Armenians, and Jews. The vast majority of the population is Muslim. Nearly three-quarters of Turkey's residents live in cities or large towns.

Major cities and tourist destinations
In all, there are at least 16 cities with at least half  million people. The largest cities include Istanbul (13.3 million residents), Ankara (4.3 million) and Izmir (2.8 million). Ankara is the capital city. Popular tourist destinations include the coastal town of Bodrum, which offers Roman ruins, trendy clubs, and small, charming villages. Bursa and Edirne, historical capitals of the Ottoman Empire, are also popular destinations. Cappadocia, an area in the central highlands, offers an otherworldly landscape (known as the “fairy chimneys,”) with cave churches, homes carved into the rocks, and underground cities.

Turkey's climate is hot and dry during the summer, while winters are wet and mild. The weather tends to be harshest in the middle of the country. Turkey also experiences occasional volcanic eruptions, along with fairly frequent earthquakes. The last major earthquake occurred in 1999.

Turkey's strategic location, along with its growing economy, have led to its recognition as a regional power in recent decades. The country's GDP is estimated at 1.29 trillion USD. With the world's 15th largest GDP, Turkey's largest industries include tourism, banking, construction, oil refining, iron and steel, construction, shipbuilding, agriculture, and the production of home appliances, automobiles, electronics, and textiles. Yearly exports are valued at $117 billion USD, and imports at $166 billion USD. The currency is the Turkish Lira.

Turkey's main international airport is Ataturk International Airport, located in Istanbul. Esenboga Airport, located in the capital city of Ankara, offers a smaller number of international flights. Major cities are also served by regional airports. Due to the size of the country, domestic flights are often a better experience than bus travel for long distances. Turkey has an extensive bus network, as well as a well-maintained network of highways. Car hire is a convenient way to travel throughout Turkey.
