Ukraine, an Eastern European country, was formerly part of the Russian Empire, and was part of the Soviet Union until 1991. It is bordered by Russia, Belarus, Poland, Slavakia, Hungary, Romania, Moldova, the Black Sea, and the Sea of Azov. Its total area is 233.090 square miles (603,628 sq km), making it the second largest country in Europe, following Russia.

Population and language
An estimated 45 million people live in the Ukraine. 78% are ethnic Ukrainians, while 17% are Russians, along with sizable minorities of Belarusians and Romanians. The official language is Ukrainian; Russian is also widely spoken. Few people speak English here, particularly outside the capital city of Kiev. Eastern Orthodox Christianity, the dominant religion in the country, has heavily influenced Ukrainian music, literature, and architecture.

Major cities and tourist destinations
The capital and largest city is Kiev. Home to 2.8 million people, this beautiful city is known for its architecture and leafy landscape. This is the most popular tourist destination in the country. Other large cities include Kharkiv (1.4 million residents), Odessa (1 million) and Dnipropetrovsk (1 million). There are several historical castles and palaces throughout the country. Adventurous travelers may wish to visit the city of Pripyat, which abandoned following the Chernobyl nuclear disaster in 1986.

The climate of the Ukraine is primarily temperate continental, with warm summers and cool winters. The southern portion of the country, along the Crimean coast, tends to be humid and warmer. It rains significantly more in the west and north than in the east and southeast. Winters are cool along the Black Sea, while inland regions experience harsher winters Average annual temperatures are 42°F-45°F (5.5°C-7°C) in the north, and  52°F-56°F (11°C-13°C) in the south.

During the Soviet era, Ukraine had the second-largest economy in the Soviet Union, serving as an important industrial and agricultural center. Following the collapse of the Soviet Union in 1991, Ukraine became an independent country in transition to a market economy; this transition was difficult for the majority of the population, which plunged into poverty. In the years following the Soviet dissolution, the economy has grown substantially. Today, the country's GDP is estimated at $329 billion USD, with $69 billion USD in exports and $86 billion USD in imports. Major industries include vehicle, aircraft, and spacecraft production and metallurgical refining. The Ukraine is the world's third-largest grain exporter. The currency is the Ukranian hryvnia.

The largest airport in the Ukraine is the Boryspil Internation Airport (KBP), located near Kiev. Once in the country, the best way for foreign tourists to travel is with car hire. Although there are public transportation networks, foreigners are subject to police scrutiny when traveling on public transportation. Be aware that within the Ukraine, road quality varies greatly, and most of the signs are in Ukrainian (which uses the Cyrillic alphabet). Consider hiring a local driver, particularly when traveling outside the major cities.
