The United States of America, often referred to as The U.S., the United States, USA, or America, is a large country consisting of 50 states located mostly in central North America. The 48 contiguous United States, along with the capital district of Washington D.C., are bounded by the Pacific Ocean to the west and the Atlantic Ocean to the east, with Canada to the north and Mexico to the south. The remaining two states are Hawaii (a chain of islands located in the Pacific Ocean) and Alaska, located in the northwest of the continent, bordering Canada to the east and Russia to the west. At 3.79 million square miles (9.83 million km sq), the United States is the world's third-largest country by total area.

Population and language
An estimated 316 million people live in the United States, making it the third most populous nation in the world. The U.S.A. is one of the world's most ethnically diverse nations, resulting from several centuries of large-scale immigration from many countries. An estimated 72% of the population is white, while 13% are Black, 5% are Asian, 1% are American Indian and Alaska Native, and 16% are Hispanic/Latino (of any race). While there is no official language, English is the de facto national language. Approximately 80% of the population speaks only English at home, while Spanish is spoken by 12% of the population at home, making it the country's second most common language.

The U.S. is officially a secular country; Protestant denominations account for approximately 51% of the population, with Roman Catholicism, at 24%, the largest individual denomination. Other faiths represented in the United States include Judaism (1.7%), Mormonism (1.6%), Buddhism (0.7%), Islam (0.5%), Hinduism (0.4%), and Unitarian Universalism (0.3%).

Major cities and tourist destinations
America includes densely-populated urban areas, sprawling suburbs, and vast stretches of sparsely inhabited land. The capital is Washington, D.C., while the largest city is New York City, with more than 19 million residents, followed by Los Angeles (13 million) and Chicago (9.5 million). The top ten largest metropolitan areas in the U.S. all have more than 4 million residents.

The country is large, complex, and diverse, with many distinct regional identities. Each of these cities is a popular tourist destination, offering a wide range of historical, cultural, and natural attractions. The most visited sites include Times Square in New York City, the casino center of Las Vegas in Nevada, the National Mall and iconic public landmarks in Washington D.C., and Disney World in Florida.

The large size and geographic diversity of the United States results in a wide variety of climate types. While most areas are temperate, there are notable exceptions. Alaska is dominated by a polar or subarctic climate, while southern Florida and Hawaii are tropical. The center of the country is semi-arid and arid, giving way to arid desert in the Southwest and alpine in the mountains. The Western coast is oceanic, giving way to Mediterranean in southern California. Most of Alaska is polar or subarctic. Extreme weather, including hurricanes, tornadoes, significant snowfall, and extremely high or low temperatures are not uncommon, though potential weather extremes vary greatly by region.

The United States has one of the world's largest economies, with an estimated GDP of $15.6 trillion USD. It also has the world's sixth-highest per capita income. The major exports in this developed, service-based nation include agricultural products (primarily fruit, corn, and soybeans), organic chemicals, manufacturing (aircraft, motor vehicle parts, telecommunications equipment, and computers) and consumer goods (such as automobiles and medicines). The United States is the largest importer of goods, with imports valued at $2.2 trillion and exports valued at $1.5 trillion. Although the recent global recession significantly affected the United States, the economy remains one of the strongest in the world.

Major international airports are located near many of the country's largest cities, including New York City, Chicago, Atlanta, Boston, Washington D.C., Orlando, Miami, Houston, Dallas, Los Angeles, and San Francisco. The U.S. has 16 of the world's 30 busiest passenger airports. Because of the large distances from one side of the country to another, traveling between regions is often done by plane. For traveling smaller distance, transportation is dominated by automobiles. The United States has one of the world's longest highway systems, with well-maintained interstate highways connecting the nation. This makes car hire the most practical and convenient way for visitors to travel in the U.S. Many cities also have well-developed bus networks, although rural areas rarely have bus connections.
